Junior Infants learned all about St Brigid today. They listened to the story of St. Brigid and her cloak and sang St. Brigid’s song. A huge thank you to Tom’s mum, Ann who made a St. Brigid’s cross for every boy and girl in Junior Infants!!!

Firstly we wondered if we could build a house just like the 3 Little Pigs that would be strong enough to protect our pet rabbit from the Big Bad Wolf. We used lego for the bricks, plastic straws for the straw house and lollipop sticks for the house made of wood. At the end, the Big Bad Wolf (hairdryer!) came and huffed and puffed to try and blow down our houses! The strongest house was the brick one, just like the story!

When we looked at a funny story called Sheep in a Jeep by Nancy Shaw, the sheep crashed their jeep at the bottom of the hill. We wondered if the hill was less steep would they have crashed? We had lots of fun with ramps and sheep attached to jeeps, making our ramps high and low and seeing what happened. The lower ramps were much safer for our jeeps but not as fun as the steep ones!

When we read the Three Billy Goats Gruff we decided to look at different types of bridges to see if we could build a new one away from the nasty troll that could hold the goats and their friends. We made bridge that went straight across, ones with sides, ones with an arch underneath and one with a zig-zag top. All our bridges held the 3 Billy Goats, but the zig-zag bridge held them and their friends!

Lately we looked at Mr. Gumpy’s Outing by John Burningham which inspired us to design our own boats and see how many passengers they could carry. We loved this experiment and were delighted to see all our boats floated! There was great competition to see how many beans each boat could hold, but at the end of the day we could only have one winner from each group! Their boats were nice and wide, with sides and a slimmer base.

Don’t worry we were not in trouble!

Inspector Kelly and Garda Kelly came in to talk to us all about staying safe.

Garda Kelly talked to us about staying safe while in the car. She told us we should always wear our seatbelts and no one should ever use their mobile phone while driving.

Inspector Kelly talked to us about how to stay safe while cycling. He told us we should always wear our helmets and make sure our bicycles are in proper working order.

They showed us their uniforms and all the things they use to protect themselves – we even got to try some things on……so did Mrs O’Meara!

We learned a lot about the work the guards do – it was very interesting. Take a look at our pictures below!

A big thank you to Inspector Kelly and Garda Kelly from all the Junior Infants and Senior Infants for coming in to talk to us!

Our delight was doubled when we received a second phone call  telling us that Jamie in Aoibhneas Class 1 was also a prizewinner – Jamie had been awarded a Certificate of Achievement.

Both pupils attended a function in Tullamore where they received their prizes.

Junior infants are revising all their maths topics and are having great fun revisiting shapes.  We are making lots of shape pictures and even using ourselves to make different shapes. photos are to follow.
