Christmas Show

Following weeks of practice our Christmas Show was performed on Friday last at 11 00 am and again at 7 00 pm.  The children were thrilled to put on the show for such enthusiastic audiences.  Well done to all the pupils who performed excellently.  We thank everyone who came to the show.  Thanks also to Anne Marie O Meara who painted the fabulous backdrop for the  Jared Madden, Kellys CEOS Birr, Central Office Supplies Cork, Andrew Walsh Bushire, Tipperary Hygiene Products, Philip Ryan.  Pictured are pupils from 3rd and 4th Class performing their play.

Board of Management

  • The Minister of Education and Skills has requested Boards of Management to carry out a survey of parents on the issue of school uniforms.  The questionnaire, which has been sent out to all parents gives an opportunity to respond to two main questions.  The first is to simply ascertain if parents want the wearing of a uniform, where it exists, to continue.   The second asks parents to indicate a preference around what may be termed generic uniforms as opposed to bespoke designs.  The results of this survey will be published in the January Newsletter.
  • We wish to thank the whole school community for their co-operation during the year and wish pupils, parents and staff a safe and Happy Christmas and New Year.

Taste of Roscrea Fashion Show

The Taste of Roscrea Fashion Show in association with our school was a fantastic success and a great night was had by all.  We were delighted with the response and had a packed venue.  We were also thrilled to have so many people volunteer to model and become involved for the school.  Well done to Niamh Ryan, mum of Cara in Second Class, who won the make over on the night.  Niamh was whisked away at the beginning of the night given a total makeover and brought back before the end of the night to be revealed to all.  Thank you to Grandparents Noreen Brophy, Kitty England and Laurence Wing, Mums Sinead Dooley, Rachel Doran, Elsie Franks, Miriam Phelan, Sarah Phelan and Michelle Standish, Dads Philip Ryan, Pio Shortt, Denis Delaney, Richie Phelan, and Colm Brophy who strutted their stuff on the catwalk.  These were joined by staff members along with Chairperson of the Board of Management Pat Flanagan, drama teacher Jared Madden, bus escort Yvonne O Toole and past pupil Amelia Lown.  Thanks too to the pupils who were lucky enough to be selected to model at a draw at assembly– perhaps one or more of these budding models will end up on one of the Next Top Model programmes, MC’s on the night were dad John Gunnell and Veronica Crowley.  Míle buíochas also to the Taste of Roscrea Festival Committee, Weddings by Caroline, main sponsor Tesco, Racket Hall for their reception and the following who gave us raffle prizes:  Standish Sawmills, Super Valu, Tesco, Mulrooney Oil, Roscrea Centre Pharmacy and Madden’s Pharmacy.  A special word of thanks to the Parents Association who helped out on the night.  A total of €3,100 was raised for the school.  Well done everybody!

Green School News

In the New Year we will organise a competition to come up with our new slogan for the theme Boidiversity – we encourage everyone to put on their thinking caps over Christmas and hope to have many entries.

Sixth Class Christmas Sale

The annual Sixth Class Christmas Sale took place yesterday.  Sixth Class really rose to the challenge of organising a great event, with lots of bargains.  There was a great bake sale, toy and book sale, and lots of organised games for the rest of the pupils to take part in.  The Sixth Class pupils also made Christmas logs and tree decorations which they sold at the Christmas show.  A total of €1431.82 was raised which will be distributed as requests for donations come in.  Well done to Sixth Class and Ms Hogan.

Carol Singing

Well done to our carol singers who sang beautifully at the Taste of Roscrea Festival recently.  The children entered the festive spirit gladly wearing Santa Hats and Christmas jumpers.  Thanks to Mrs O Meara, Ms McMahon and Ms D’Arcy for helping out on the night.

Lunchtime Hurling League

The boys from 4th, 5th and 6th Class really enjoyed the lunchtime indoor hurling league.  We had six teams comprising of pupils from each class and the teams played each other three times.  The final, which was very tense and exciting, between London and Donegal was played today with Donegal coming out the winners on a score line of 3 – 1.  Well done boys!

Sixth Class to go to Science Exhibition in the RDS

Pupils in Sixth Class were delighted with the news they qualified for the Primary Section of the Young Scientist Exhibition which will be held in the RDS in Dublin.  The pupils will have an early start on Thursday 9th January as they must have their exhibit on display by 9 30 am.  The pupils will demonstrate how to generate electricity out of fruit and vegetables.  They will also do a demonstration for all the pupils of the school, and for their parents when they come home.  The Board of Management has kindly offered to sponsor the bus to the Science Fair.  Good luck to Ms Hogan and the 6th Class pupils.

Religious Ceremonies

School Chaplin Fr Michael Harding along with Sr Marie Galvin visited the school on recently for our Advent Prayer Service.  They were delighted with the responses from the children and were particularly impressed with the Advent Calendar and the messages contained behind each door.

Mobile Phone Collection

We have just taken delivery of our 1st ipad thanks to the mobile phone collection we did recently in school.  We have banked 35 phones and will start collecting again in the New Year.  If any phones are replaced or upgraded during the Christmas season perhaps you might send us the obsolete ones as we save for even more ipads.  Thanks everyone!

Maths For Fun

Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered for Maths for Fun, which was a great success.  The Programme will commence again after the midterm break in February in 1st and 4th Class  If you are available and willing to get involved please telephone the office after Christmas or email dromakeenan.ias@eircom.net.

Santa’s Visit

Santa made his annual visit today.  His reindeer must have been reserving their energy again this year because Santa arrived with lights and sirens blazing – in a fire engine accompanied by the Gardaí.  He brought sweets for us all – Thank you Santa, Tracey from the Credit Union, the firemen and Gardaí and Parents Association.
